Flood Gallery Fine Art Center in Asheville, NC, Features Works by Karen Havens

The Flood Gallery Fine Art Center in Asheville, NC, will present the exhibit, USED, featuring an exhibit of works by New York state artist Karen Havens, on view from Sept. 11 through Oct. 6, 2009.

Havens' provocative 2-D and sculptural works express the fundamental, yet socially repressed, human emotions of sexuality, identity, anger, and confusion. The works are produced as Havens gives in to her own impulses as they are physically acted out. For example, the sculptural/installation work, Last F***, includes such found materials as a deconstructed mattress draped on a wood frame, discarded cemetery arrangements and circus peanuts. The resultant gallery work gives clues as to what occurred physically and conceptually during the making, some being obvious while others are left purely to the viewer's imagination. The indications of the making and construction of her works are openly visible.

Visitors should be aware of the aggressive and confrontational nature of the work, use of expletives, as well as sexual content.
