Hickory Museum of Art in Hickory, NC, Offers Exhibit Focused on Daggers

Fred Carter

The Hickory Museum of Art in Hickory, NC, is presenting the exhibit, Treacherous Beauty: The Art of the Dagger, on display through Feb. 7, 2010, in the Museum's Objects Gallery. The exhibition consists of a variety of 68 knives, daggers and swords crafted by local and international artists.

Guest curator, Preston Bryant, said the title was chosen for this display because "it contrasts the 'treachery' of a hand forged, razor sharp honed steel blade with the 'beauty' of a jeweled, gold inlaid or carved Persian ivory handle."

The knife was one of the first tools developed by humans and can be traced back as far as two- million years ago. For our ancestors, the knife was an essential tool for survival. Today, knives have many uses and can be labeled in one of four categories: weapons, utensils, tools and religious implement. In this exhibition, the knife itself is a canvas to the artisans who create the intricate designs on both the blade and handle. Visitors will be fascinated by the skill and craftsmanship of the knife makers.

HMA would like to thank Zenda Leather, Stone Works Granite Fabricators and artist William Barron Stronach III for their contribution of props to the exhibition.

The Hickory Museum of Art is a United Arts Council of Catawba County Funded Affiliate and is located in the "SALT Block" Arts & Science Center of the Catawba Valley in Hickory.
