North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences in Raleigh, NC, Features Works by Mark Pomilio

The North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences in Raleigh, NC, will present the exhibit, Art of Science, featuring works on paper and canvas by Mark Pomilio in the Nature Art Gallery, from Sept. 4 - 28, 2009.

The Art of Science is a visual articulation of recent developments in the life sciences.  Pomilio strives to create images that embody principles of geometry, fractals, cloning and single cell manipulation. His works begin with a single or set of geometric forms that are then folded and multiplied, a process the artist refers to as "cloning" throughout the pictorial field, while maintaining a sense of harmony.

Pomilio's artwork has been exhibited both nationally and internationally with shows at the Chapelle Saint-Louis de la Salapetriere in Paris, France, the Art Resources Transfer in New York City, and the Robert V. Fullerton Museum in San Bernardino, CA. He is currently assistant professor of drawing and painting at Arizona State University. Prior to this he taught at Baylor University in Waco, TX and the University of Michigan's School of Art and Design in Ann Arbor.

Pomilio has won numerous awards, grants, fellowships and artist-in-residencies and has been invited to lecture nationally on topics as diverse as art and mathematics and the role the visual arts can play in understanding the social ramifications of advances in the life sciences. He earned his Masters of Fine Arts from the University of Michigan, a Bachelors of Fine Arts from the University of Pennsylvania and a four-year studio degree in painting from the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts.
