RedSky Gallery in Charlotte, NC, Features Works by Shane Fero

The RedSky Gallery located in the Dilworth area of Charlotte, NC, will present an exhibit of glass objects by internationally recognized artist, Shane Fero, on view from Sept. 11 through Nov. 12, 2009.

Fero, an enthusiastic birder himself, creates vibrant and lively flame-work glass birds and other natural objects. As fall approaches, it is easy to recognize Fero's birds as colorful celebrations of the much awaited season. In this exhibition, he will be showing works for both the wall and pedestal. Just as many birds' songs have overtones that give a richness of quality to each note, Fero's individual works become more beautiful when they can be appreciated in conjunction with additional works so that the overtones of variations and subtleties can be recognized.

Fero began creating glass pieces using flame-working techniques while he was a teenager, learning his craft in carnival settings. Thirty years later, he is considered one of the pre-eminent artists at the torch. Today, Fero's exuberant works can be found in museums around the world, including the Glasmuseum, Ebeltoft, Denmark; the New Orleans Museum of Art; the Museum fur Glaskunst, Lauscha, Germany; and the Niijima Contemporary Glass Museum, Niijima, Japan.

In the United States his work can be found at the University of Michigan and Penland School of Crafts. His work has been exhibited at The Studio, Corning Museum of Glass (NY), Southern Ohio Museum, Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts (AL), Hunter Museum of American Art (TN), Ohio Craft Museum, Kentucky Museum of Arts and Design, St. Johns Museum of Art (NC), Georgia Museum of Art, Museum of York County (SC), and the Mint Museum of Art (NC).

Flame-working is a particular technique in glass art that has come to the forefront within the past decade. Fero's figurative works are formed through the manipulation of glass rods in a flame torch, alternately adding to and cooling the molten glass in sequential steps until the desired form takes shape. He often uses colored glass shards, powders, cane or even stained glass to accomplish the swirling patterns and mysterious movement of color in his work.

RedSky Gallery features original works on paper and canvas, sculpture, ceramic, glass, studio furniture, art-to-wear, jewelry, and more. Over 500 regional and national artists are represented at three gallery locations in Dilworth, Blakeney Town Centre in South Charlotte and the EpiCentre in Uptown.
