Stephen Shoemaker Works to be Featured at the Art Cellar Gallery & Framemakers

Through the month of Oct., the distinctive works of local artist Stephen Shoemaker will be on exhibit at the Art Cellar Gallery & Framemakers in Banner Elk, NC. Shoemaker's watercolor and graphite works are delicately detailed, yet powerful. His depictions of landscapes and figures are dramatically composed and meticulously executed. Shoemaker often contrasts his subtle colors with broad areas of stark white, creating a theatrical ambiance which is sure to captivate the viewer.

Shoemaker was born and raised in West Jefferson, NC, and began his art career at Brevard College in 1964. He also attended Guilford College before spending two years in the military. Shoemaker earned his fine art degree from Appalachian State University. He spent twenty years in Charlotte, NC, where he worked in visual merchandising. His paintings are heavily collected by corporations and private collectors nationally and internationally. Past exhibitions include The Mint Museum of Art in Charlotte as well as galleries in Japan, Russia, Australia, and Germany.

The twenty one works available at the Art Cellar Gallery & Framemakers illustrate Shoemaker's remarkable skill at suggesting a hidden narrative in an uncomplicated composition. Shoemaker's palate centers around deep, rich colors which are combined to create a theatrical atmosphere. The works leave the viewer questioning the "story" behind the art by allowing a personal interpretation of the mysterious scene.

According to Shoemaker, "Life as an artist is very rewarding with the profession giving you much more than mere monetary gain in return for your labor and creativity. I refer to my art as an itch that has to be scratched, and there is such great satisfaction in reproducing and interpreting what I witness around me."
