Who is Looking at Carolina Arts Online?

Updated Nov. 6, 2007

As of August 21, 2007, there have been 8,345,130 visitors to Carolina Arts Online - about 200,000 a month. The top ten countries of the visitors has not changed. France is still number one. The big change is that there is much more to look at - over 14,000 different elements, and we're adding more every week.

A new feature is that we now post PDF's of the individual papes of the printed version of the paper every month, so you can now see how the paper looks each month - ads, photos, and all. The link is on the index page.

It should be no surprise to the savvy Carolina Arts Online reader that Europeans are more interested in the fine arts than Americans are. Viewers from France and the United Kingdom top our viewer list - in fact they have topped the list since Jan. 03. The top ten countries viewing Carolina Arts Online hasn't changed since Jan. 03. But, thanks to our good neighbors to the north in Canada, North Americans still are counted as a good part of our viewership. But it is surprising to find that the site is very popular with Asians - and countries of the Pacific Rim - Taiwan, Australia, Japan and New Zealand. Some of that has to do with our web server, who merged at one point with a major Asian network.

Wondering who is down the list? Well, as of July 8, 2004, #11 was Spain - missing the Top Ten by 23 hits. Next came Belgium at #13 - missing the Top Ten by 162 hits. New Zealand, which was in the Top Ten in 2001 is at #14 - 270 hits away. I guess everyone there has been busy making the movies of The Lord of the Rings. At #50 we find the Dominican Republic - just 771 hits away from being a Top Ten country.

A Periodic list of the Top Ten is included below.

Other Info About the Site

The website has been up since June 1999, and we are very close to seeing the number of viewers top the 2 million mark. And, why not - we have over 3,682 pages of content. That's a lot of reference possibilities when people are surfing the web or doing a Google search.

Some interesting stats from the last 90 days are as follows: The top day the site was viewed was April 14, 2004, with over 10,000 hits. The most popular month was June 2004 with 81,638 hits with the most popular week being June 6 - 12, 2004. The most popular hour to view our site seems to be 3pm and most popular day is the 14th of the month. People like to take a look at us on Mondays and Wednesdays.

So What About Those 3,692 Pages?

Of course the top page viewed is the Index Page or Home Page with #2 being the Gallery Listings front page. Then comes #3 - SC Commercial Gallery Listings; #4 - NC - Commercial Gallery listings, showing that viewers are most interested in the commercial galleries. At #5 comes the Feature Articles front page and #6 is the NC Institutional Gallery listings. The #7 spot is somewhat of a surprise in that it is a page of photos of artwork presented in an exhibition at the Columbia Museum of Art from Apr. 2001 - Pop Impact! From Johns to Warhol. This includes images of works by Jasper Johns, Andy Warhol and other pop artists. At #8 comes the SC Institutional Gallery listings.

The #9 spot is a page offering a listing of exhibits taking place in the Charleston, SC, area. Some years ago we made a separate page for the masses of people interested in Charleston and its art scene. Coming in at #9 seems to back that interest up. A listing of Classes and Workshop being offered in the Carolinas comes in at #10. This is part of our ART NEWS section which is very popular with artists. We don't get to print much of this info in the printed version of the paper. Plus we get to update info received after deadline on our website. And, of course #11 is the ART NEWS front page. The #12 spot is a description page for that Charleston Visual Arts section mentioned at #9. The #13 spot is the Red Hot Links front page. I use this a lot myself - it takes you to hundreds of other websites throughout the Carolinas.

At #14 we find a page giving Juried Show Results from 2002. This is a page listing winning entries from various juried shows which took place during the year 2002. I guess it just goes to show - everyone likes a winner. The page has a lot of artists' names so it will come up when people are searching for info about an artist.

The #15 spot is a real mystery and marvel of the Internet. It is an old list of NC Galleries which we use to offer on our site, but took the link off our Home Page years ago, as we realized how hard it would be to keep this info correct and updated. But, it is still there in cyber space and as of July 8, 78 people have accessed the page and 277 did the same in June, 2004. We will probably cancel that info from our server file soon - even though it seems to be a popular spot. I hate giving out inaccurate information. The #16 spot is our Web Mail page. We get a lot of e-mail!!!! The #17 spot is Dated Call For Entries - part of ART NEWS. I'm surprised this is not higher on the list.

The #18 page is another page in the ART NEWS section - Artists & Administrations, which is a compilation of press releases about individual artists' accomplishments and info about visual art institutions and people who work with them. This is a real mix of different kinds of info. The #19 spot is another mystery. This is an old Red Hot Links page which had some logos on it with links. We took this off some time ago as it would also be hard to keep this up and be fair to all involved. Again, cyber space is a strange place and this too will be erased in the future. The #20 spot is our first individual article which was placed in our Special Features section. It deals with the Palmetto Project which took place in Columbia, SC, and went on our site in July 2000. It shows a lot of pictures of the steel palmetto trees which were created for a public art project. Four years later, 78 people have viewed this by July 8, 2004 and 277 viewed the article in June 2004.

The #21 spot is one of my favorites - another Special Features article I did on the making of glass art. I took pictures of the process at One Eared Cow Glass in Columbia, SC. Many people have been drawn to this page for various reasons. I've gotten many e-mails myself from students doing reports on glass art. This article has been very popular over the last five years. You know, things taking place in Columbia, SC, have been coming up in the top pages. Maybe folks in Columbia are obsessed with themselves - maybe they just produce a lot of popular art events. The #22 spot is the current Juried Show Results page. The Charleston, SC Visual Arts Home Page comes in at #23 and it's no surprise that the #24 spot is the Juried Show Results for 2001. And, rounding out the top 25 pages is the Special Features front page. There's a lot of good stuff there - things we just couldn't do in the printed version of the paper.

As few noteworthy pages shortly down the list include: #35 - an article about the Seagrove, NC, area - an area with over 100 potteries; #36 is another all time favorite. It's a Special Feature about O. Winston Link, a photographer who took pictures of old trains; #45 is the Commentary page - a first read section of the printed paper but not so popular to world viewers - go figure; and at #53 is a recent article about an exhibit of face jugs at Southern Pottery Workcenter & Gallery - in Columbia, SC. This article went up in Feb. 2004 and is still generating a lot of interest.

It always interesting to take a look at what people around the world are interested in - right here in the Carolinas. Let us know what you found interesting on Carolina Arts Online - e-mail us at (info@carolinaarts.com).
