Davidson College Exhibit Highlights Four Southeastern Artists

The exhibition Across State Lines: Drawing from the Southeast will be open to the public through Dec. 8 in the William H. Van Every Jr. Gallery of Davidson College's Belk Visual Arts Center, Davidson, NC.

Across State Lines: Drawing from the Southeast features works by Dana Moore, Joe Walters, Larry Jens Anderson, and Clive King, four artists living and working in the Southeast. Each of the artists explores the art of drawing through a variety of unusual mediums and processes.

Dana Moore is from Penland, NC. Her subtle works combine the vocabulary of two artistic mediums, drawing and photography. She begins by acquiring old photographic portraits, sometimes referred to as "cabinet cards," from flea markets and antique shops. She then erases and draws back into these images, creating a whimsical and psychologically unsettling cast of characters.

Joe Walters, from Charleston, SC, is best known for his weathered and rusted sculptures of plants and animals. The drawings he presents in this exhibition make reference to the ancient art of fresco. He initially draws the subject on a piece of paper and then pokes holes on the lines of the image. He then folds the paper in half and pours coffee or tea through the holes. The use of this staining technique results in aged and luminous works that recall the spontaneous appeal of Rorschach tests.

Atlanta's Larry Jens Anderson takes a more conceptual approach to his subject matter. In a series he calls the Dick Drawings, Anderson utilizes the iconic image of Dick from the Dick and Jane books of his youth. Through collage, drawing and repetition, he questions how society defines the roles of masculinity for young American males.

Clive King of Miami creates drawings that are, at once, monumental in scale and obsessively intricate in detail. One of the works featured in this exhibition, Madre-cariad (Motherlove), is nine feet high and twenty-eight feet long.
