Two New Exhibits at Durham Arts Council

Two new exhibits will be featured at the Durham Arts Council Building in Durham, NC, from Oct. 14 - Nov. 16. Bones, Beetles and Botanicals is the title of an exhibit of illustrations by Durham artist, Katherine Shelburne that will hang in the Semans Gallery. Botanicals, a watercolor exhibit by Bynum, NC, artist Emma Skurnick, will be in the Allenton Gallery.

Bones, Beetles and Botanicals displays colored pencil and pen and ink illustrations of botanical and biological subject matter. Shelburne's original interest was in illustrating carnivorous plants, not only those at her home but those at the North Carolina Botanical Gardens. More recently her interest has switched to insects, bones and general botanical specimens, endangered species, reptiles, amphibians, and currently butterflies. "While my illustrations are usually scientifically correct, there are times for expanding on realism."

Katherine Shelburne was named Natural History Artist in Residence at Edmund Niles Huyck Preserve in New York in 1999. Exhibits include New York State Museum, Guild of Natural Science Illustrators National Show in Washington, 1999 and Iowa, 1998, Alamance County Arts Council, North Carolina Botanical Garden's Trotten Center in Chapel Hill and at the North Carolina Museum of Life & Science. She will be in an upcoming exhibit at the North Carolina Museum of Natural History in Raleigh. Shelburne is currently employed with Durham Public Schools as a School Psychologist.

Botanicals featuring watercolors by Emma Skurnick displays new works by the artist. Until last year she was putting most of her energy into sculpture, looking towards nature for inspiration. But has now realized that, "....I could never create an object as perfect and complete as an acorn, or an ant". Last spring she began to draw and paint straight from nature. "Living beside the Haw River and wandering daily along its banks, I can discover something new every time I step out the door, if I take the time to look."

Emma Skurnick was raised in New York and studied sculpture and drawing at the State University of New York at Binghamton. She will be spending this year in Santa Cruz, CA, drawing starfish and beetles while getting her certification in Science illustration.
