Hilton Head Art League Features Works by Tom Ratliffe

Intrigued by the enchantment of where we live, Hilton Head Art League member, Tom Ratliffe, so named the exhibit of his work at the Art League's gallery at Sea Pines Center, on Hilton Head Island, SC. The Enchantment of Where We Live, will be on view at the gallery through July 16.

Much of the art was inspired by painting on location in and around the Lowcountry. He paints with equal skill in a variety of mediums, including watercolors, pastels, acrylics and Conte crayon .. "whatever I think will work best for the subject," he says.

A prolific and talented artist, Ratliffe studied at the Art Center College of Los Angeles and was a commercial artist in New York City for 40 years, and president of the Tom Ratliffe Studios there. Born in San Antonio, TX, Ratliffe was a Marine captain and pilot during WWII.

"I try to go beyond the descriptive and communication aspect of painting to add some emotional content, some mystery, through use of color, composition, line and texture. This makes a piece of art your own," says Ratliffe. His own style of approaching each subject has won him many awards in national juried exhibitions, including those of the Northwest Watercolor Society, the Southern Watercolor Society, Oklahoma Watercolor Society and the South Carolina Watercolor Society. He was featured in the August '98 issue of The Artist's Magazine. Locally he has won awards in many Hilton Head and Beaufort Art League Juried Shows.

Ratliffe's work can regularly be seen on Hilton Head Island at the Art League's Gallery at Sea Pines Center, and the CSA Gallery in Sea Pines.

Inspired by the Lowcountry, Ratliffe says that "there is something to be painted anywhere." In addition to the works by Tom Ratliffe, numerous paintings and artworks by other member artists will also be on display. All works are for sale.

The Hilton Head Art League is a not-for-profit membership organization, dedicated to promoting the visual arts in the community and enhancing the skills of its member artists.
