- The Pickens County Cultural Commission
in Pickens, SC, has announced the results of the "Pickens
County Museum's 26th Annual Juried Artist's Exhibition",
on view at the Pickens County Museum
through Dec. 20, 2003. An artist, gallery owner and professor
of art in Atlanta, GA, Carl A. Linstrum served as juror for this
year's competition. Linstrum has exhibited his paintings, drawing
and sculptures regionally, nationally, and internationally over
the past ten years and is in many prominent public and private
collections. He has been the director and owner of Aliya Gallery
in Atlanta, since 1993, representing a broad range of art in
a variety of media and styles, from the hands of emerging artists
to established artists from across the globe. In addition, Linstrum
has been a professor of drawing and design at Georgia Perimeter
College in Atlanta since 2002. Linstrum spent the day of Oct.
13, 2003, looking at, and contemplating 388 works of art representing
150 South Carolina artists. The vast array of paintings, drawings,
photographs, prints, ceramics, fiber and other mediums made for
the difficult task of selecting works for, and eliminating works
from, the final show. The impressive final selection of 109 works
of art represents 79 individuals currently creating visual art
in this state. Speaking about the task of jurying such a competition,
Linstrum said, "The process of jurying an exhibition of
contemporary fine art is a strange and wonderful thing. One is
faced with the challenge of entering into a series of rooms filled
with the works of many talented and insightful individuals and
selecting a body of work that represents a snapshot of what has
been created in a specific time and place." Linstrum continued,
"In being presented with all of the submissions for this
exhibition and throughout the process of making my selections,
I was most impressed with the scope and diversity of the works
to choose from. From the most traditional to the highly conceptual,
it was refreshing to be faced with the great range being addressed
by contemporary artists in South Carolina today. It is a wonderful
time to be an artist, knowing that all of these facets of creativity
are being practiced to great effect and in harmony. If I had
to choose a theme or all-encompassing statement for this exhibition,
then it would have to be a celebration of this diversity in this
place, and in this time." The awards for this year's competition
represent not only a cross section of what is taking place in
the visual arts of South Carolina today, but are also a fair
representation of the variety of artists actively "at work".
Linstrum chose the earthenware work "Large Stoppered Bottle"
by Belton's Johnny Nutt as the First Place Award. Second Place
was presented to Susan Sorrell of Greenville for her fiber &
mixed media piece "Kissing". The Third Place honor
went to Walhalla's Travis Linville for the silver gelatin print
"Census / Censer". Honorable Mentions were bestowed
upon J. Chris Campbell of Greenville for his digital image "Ernie
Kovacs" and to Travelers Rest's Greg Patton for his mixed
media "Journal". In addition to the above awards, Linstrum
asked that a special "Juror's Choice" accolade, denoting
artwork of special interest, be presented to Spartanburg's David
M. Benson for his mixed media "Birds of a Feather",
to Gregg Crume from Seneca for his Venetian glass tile mosaic
"Transformation: Shaman to Loon", to Simpsonville's
Walter Kerr for his mixed media "Illumination" and
to Susan Lenz of Columbia for her mix media altered book "Overland
Route: A Creative Travel Journal". Teresa Mills, representing
the Peoples National Bank, selected the forged iron "Southern
Ladies" along with the Damascus steel, brass & wood
"Waterfall", both by Griz Hockwalt of Pickens as the
recipient of the Peoples National Bank Purchase Award and will
add both of these works to the Peoples National Bank Collection.
The Pickens County Museum selected seven works that, within the
scope of their mission directive, will be added to the museum's
permanent collection. The Pickens County Cultural Commission's
Purchase Award honoring Shirley Sarlin was presented to Dale
Cochran of Easley for his watercolor "Imagination".
Additional Museum Purchase Awards were made to Easley's Steven
Chapp for his Intaglio etching print "Shadows at Bend",
to Amanda Fowler from Liberty for her color digital output photo
"The Plunder Shop", to Six Mile's Ellen Lorene Hudson
for her mixed media "Totem Gourd Lizard", to Shannon
Keys of Easley for her Temari fiber works "Fire Kiku"
& "Celtic Rose" and to Gray Court's B. J. Turner
for her oil painting "American Sycamore". In addition
to the eighteen works of art singled out for special mention,
there are ninety-one more on the walls and pedestals throughout
the museum's second floor galleries. No matter where your individual
taste in art may lead, you will find some satisfaction in this
exhibition. The variety of work represented is a generous reflection
of the community of artists presently at work in South Carolina
and, indeed, our world. The competition and exhibition were made

- The Spartanburg County Museum of Art in
Spartanburg, SC, has announced the winners of the "2nd Biennial
Hub City Art Competition and Exhibition". The show will be on exhibit through Dec. 30, 2003.
The competition was juried by artist and illustrator Burt Silverman
from New York. The awards are as follows: First Place ($2,000)
went to Doug Whittle of Spartanburg, SC, for an oil work entitled,
"Old Rice Pond"; Second Place ($1,000) went to Stephen
Chesley of Columbia, SC, for an oil work entitled, "Slight
Wind"; Third Place ($750) went to Christy Green of Hartwell,
GA, for a work in egg tempera entitled, "Melissa";
and Fourth Place ($500) went to Lenore Barnett of Hendersonville,
NC, for an acrylic work entitled, "Black Bear Trail".
Merit Awards of ($200 each) were given to: Michael Fowler of
N. Augusta, SC, for a work in oil entitled, "Woods Edge
II"; Lynn Greer of Greenville, SC, for a watercolor work
entitled, "Determination"; Linda Hyatt Cancel of Laurens,
SC, for a work in oil entitled, "I Just Wanted to See the
Show", Claire Miller Hopkins of Spartanburg, SC, for a pastel
work entitled, "Golden Afternoon"; and Eula La Croix
of Hendersonville, NC, for a pastel work entitled, "Life's
Toll, #3". Honorable Mentions Awards of ($100 each) were
given to: John Shaberts of Simpsonville, SC, for a photograph
"Where Poets Dream"; Russell Smith of Spartanburg,
SC, for a photograph entitled, "Tobacco Rowed"; and
David M. Starzec of Greenville, SC, for a mixed media work entitled,

- Artists from all over Caldwell County, NC,
participated in the Caldwell Arts Council's "27th Annual
Caldwell County Visual Artist Competition". The juror for
this year's event was Wendy Outland of Ashville, NC. Over sixty
pieces of artworks, including painting, sculpture, pottery, collage,
drawings, and drawings make up this exhibit. This year's award
winners are: Bernhardt Furniture Company Award went to Scott
Kunkle for "Boy In Snow" and the Satie Broyhill Award
went to Suzette Bradshaw for "Marge Was Running Late Again".
Honorable Mention Awards went to: David Carr for "Tiger
Maple Tilt Top Table"; Matthew Strawn for "Winter Sunset";
Andrew Atkins for "Life's Confetti"; and Amanda Chapman
for "Sing". Juror's Merit Awards were given to: Virginia
Sauer for "At the Fish Hatchery" and Jan Martin for
"Years Gone By". The exhibit is sponsored annually
by Bernhardt Furniture, LA Properties, and Grand Manor Furniture.
Their commitment to the arts in Caldwell County, and to this
event, have directly impacted this exhibit and it's maturation
in the level of quality and caliber of entries that we now see.

- The Charleston Artist Guild in Charleston,
SC, has announced the award winners of the "First
Federal's 19th Annual People's Choice Art Exhibition,"
which was on display at First Federal's main branch office in
downtown Charleston from Sept. 30 - Oct. 14, 2003. The exhibit
attracted approximately 75 original works from exhibiting members
of the Guild. The jurors for the show were Santa Fe, NM, artists
Albert Handel and his wife Anita West. The award results were
as follows: Best of Show went to Ray Goodbred; First Place went
to Monika Ives; Second Place went to Kelly Hazel; and Third Place
was given to Stephanie Shuler Hamlet. Honorable Mention Awards
were given to: Kevin Metzger, Bob Thames, Isabel Forbes, Jennifer
Black, Tami Cardnella and Nancy Pellott. A work by Robert Sweeny
was selected for the First Federal Purchase Award. The winner
of the People's Choice Award went to Sherry Bevins for "Best
Friends". This year's exhibit marked the 50th anniversary

- The Watercolor Society of North Carolina
has announced the results of its "58th Annual Juried Exhibition",
held at the Bank of the Arts in New Bern, NC, from Sept. 14 -
Oct. 24, 2003. The juror for the event was Miles Batt. The award
winners were: First Place ($1,250) went to Diane Rodwell for
"Brand New Sofa"; Second Place ($850) went to Jeffrey
Jakab for "Beach Brothers"; Third Place ($600) went
to Rita Fujimagari for "Back Porch"; Fourth Place ($400)
was given to Nancy Handlan for "Suspended Pear"; and
Fifth Place ($250 Edwin H. Voorhees Memorial Award) went to Richard

for "Empty Conversations". The Jean Pendergraft "Creative
Spirit" Award ($300) went to Michael Dorsey for "The
Expense of the Accidental"; the Alice Johnson LaRoque Scott
Memorial Award ($300) went to David Stickel for "Enter In";
the Georgia A. Newton Memorial Award ($300) went to Susan Schuhmacher
for "Rouge Rocker"; and the Past Presidents Award,
2003 ($425) went to Sally T. Griffin for "Bottled Creativity".

- The 2003 Piccolo Spoleto Outdoor Juried
Art Show took place at Marion Square
park in Charleston, SC, from May 23 through June 8, 2003. Over
80 artists from throughout SC maintained art booths for the 17
days of the Spoleto/Piccolo Festival. The juror for awards was
Kevin Grogan. The show is coordinated by Billie Sumner and Victoria
Platt Ellis. The Top Award Winners from the show were: the City
of Charleston Mayor's Purchase Award went to Honor Marks for
a painting entitled, Amarillis; First Place went ot John Michiels
for a photograph entitled, Drayton Hall #8; Second Place went
to Detta Cutting Zimmerman for an oil painting; and Third Place
went to J. Michael Kennedy for a painting entitled Peaceful Dreams.
Five equal Merit Awards were given to: Fred Jamar, Karen Hewitt
Hagan, Darly Knox, Leslie Pratt Thomas, and Kellie Jacobs. Five
Honorable Mention Awards were given to: Susan Mayfield West,
John W. Jones, Kelly Griffin, Kathrine Dietzel DuTremble, and

- Charleston Crafts proudly announces the award
winners from the two Piccolo Spoleto Fine Craft Shows, held in
Charleston SC, May 23-25, and May 30 - June 1, 2003. Awards totaling
$5,125 were presented. Wendy Outland, who now manages the Blue
Spiral 1 gallery in Asheville, NC, juried the first show. She
has an extensive background in visual arts, currating exhibitions,
and managed Florida's public art program. Mary A. Jackson, a
professional artist in the art of sweetgrass baskets, juried
the second show. While maintaining a full time studio in Charleston,
she has served on numerous boards of professional art organizations
as well as being a juror for many art shows, including the American
Craft Council Shows. Jackson's achievements in basket making
and design have brought her international recognition and acclaim,
to include the 1993 Lifetime Achievement Craft Award by the National
Museum of Women in the Arts. The coordinators, Dorinda Harmon,
Vicki Vigneault, and Kasey Briggs greatly appreciated the efforts
of the artisans who came from seventeen states to present their
items and made the 25th annual shows such a success. Charleston
Crafts, Inc., a cooperative organization of South Carolina fine
craft artists, produced the events in cooperation with the Piccolo
Spoleto Festival. The City of Charleston, Office of Cultural
Affairs, produces the Festival. The Top Award Winners from the
two 2003 Piccolo Spoleto Crafts Shows: Overall, Mayors Purchase
Award went to Jean Yao a basket makers from Ft. Lauderdale, FL,
and the Slide Jurors Choice Award went to Judy Goskey a jeweler
from Burton, OH. Winners from the May 23-25, 2003 Show were:

OH; Second Place ($300) went to Chris Ailes a fiber artist from
New York, NY; Third Place ($200) went to Nathan Rose a wood artist

- The 2003 Piccolo Spoleto Juried Art Exhibition
took place at the Visitor Center in Charleston, SC, from May
23 through June 6, 2003. The 19th annual competition sponsored
by the City of Charleston Office of Cultural Affairs and coordinated
by F. David Trickey and the Charleston Artist Guild attracted
97 artists who submitted 278 entries. The juror, Angela D. Mack,
Curator of Collections at the Gibbes Museum of Art in Charleston,
SC, selected 63 works for the exhibition. The Show's Award Winners
were: First Place Award ($1,000) went to Janet Orselli of Columbia,
SC, for High Chair; Second Place Award ($500) went to Jim Darlington
of Sullivan's Island, SC, for Portrait of David B.; and Third
Place Award ($250) went to Alvin Staley of Orangeburg, SC, for
Revelation 3:20 #3. Five Honorable Mention Awards of ($50 each)
went to: Adurline Chellis of Summerville, SC, for a collage entitled,
Paper Doll; Janet Kozachek of Orangeburg, SC, for a mixed media
on board work entitled, Icon; Susan Lenz of Columbia, SC, for
a work in fiber entitled, The Tropics; F. W. Pate of Greenville,
SC, for a photograph entitled, Just Waiting - Rural Cuba; and
C. Terry Rodgers of Charleston, SC, for an oil on velvet entitled,

- Winners in the 30th Annual Juried Exhibition
of the Artists' Guild of Spartanburg were announced May 16
at the opening reception at the Spartanburg Arts Center. The
first place prize of $1000 was awarded to Janusz Zadurowicz for
the oil paintings, Chosen and Placed and The Daily Question.
Second place of $750 went to Carole Tinsley for Early Morning
Blues, an acrylic painting, and Abandoned Site, mixed media.
The third place award of $500 went to Glen Miller for Night Dancer,
a mixed media work. Merit award winners were Louis Dischler,
Dom Ferullo, Beth Regula, Josh Marshall, Ann Wenz, Lynne Tanner,
Claire Hopkins and Jim Creal. Winners of gift certificates from
local businesses were Steve Marlow, Terrell Stone, Suzanne Zoole
and Linda Hyatt Cancel. More than $3000 worth of cash and prizes
was awarded. The show was juried by photographer Jack Leigh of
Savannah, GA, who included 101 of the 306 entries. The show continues
through June 27, 2003, in the Milliken and Parsons galleries
of the Spartanburg County Museum of Art, 385 S. Spring Street,
Spartanburg, SC. Winners' work can be seen in the adjacent Artists'

- The Florence Museum in Florence, SC, has announced the winners of the "25th Statewide
Art Competition, on view at the Museum through May 25, 2003.
Juror for the show this year was Josh Z. Yu, Professor and Chair
of the Painting Department at the Savannah College of Arts and
Design. Dr. Yu has been with SCAD since 1944. He also assists
with and directs special projects and international exhibitions.
In curating a show, Yu stated, "My philosophy.., is to create
an artist's voice with balance and harmony." Those chosen
award winners are part of a strong showing of South Carolina
talent. First Place and a $1000 cash prize went to Claire Farrell
of Lexington for her monotype with chine collé, Treasure
in Krakow. Shu-Wu Lin of Charleston took second place and $500,
for his oil on canvas, A Mask. Third place and $400 went to Rose
Metz from Sumter for her mixed media piece entitled, Fingerprints.
Four Honorable Mention Awards, worth $75 each went to Donna Goodman
of Florence for her digital piece, Baba's Eulogy; Brenda Phelan
of Florence for her watercolor collage, Slippage; Carolyn Schretzmann-Jebaily
of Florence for her hand-built porcelain Black Dragonfly Pot,
and Alvin Staley of Orangeburg for his oil on canvas, Aleece.
"All of the works in the show represent a broad spectrum
of media, styles and subject matter," explained Florence
Museum director, Betsy Olsen. 'There is much high quality work
which displays inventiveness, creativity, and expression of the
person behind the work." The exhibition was sponsored by

- 2003 National Juried Show: A Salute To
Our Members Juried In

- 32 Hilton Head Art League Members have crossed the first hurdle... they've been juried
into the 16th annual National Juried Art League Show. With ever
increasing competition, it is a tribute to the talent and skills
of our member artists.
There were 726 entries submitted by 359 artists (88 of whom were
Art League members) from 42 states, plus entries from Quebec
and Ontario. A total of 123 entries were juried into the show.
(Last year there were only 316 artists submitting 663 slides.)
Juror, Marilyn Hughey Phillis will be on Hilton Head Island on
March 22 to view the artwork accepted in to the show and make
her decisions for awards.
The Opening Night and Awards Ceremony will be held on Friday
evening, May 2 from 5-7pm. In the ambience of excitement, warmed
by the flow of wine and hors d'oeuvres, the winning artists will
be announced. Juror Phillis will be our special Guest of Honor.
The reception is free. It will be an opportunity to congratulate
our winners and a chance to purchase the art, all of which is
for sale.
Marilyn Hughey Phillis returns to the Greer Gallery at the Arts
Center of Coastal Carolina for the very important Critic's Luncheon
on Saturday, May 3 at noon. Enjoy a delicious box lunch while
juror Marilyn Phillis guides you through the maze of critical
analyses and decisions that took her from 723 entries to a handful
of finalists.
The Critic's luncheon is always a "sell-out" event.
