Practical Extravagance On Display at NationsBank Plaza

Practical Extravagance, the summer exhibition for the City Arts Series at NationsBank Plaza, Columbia, SC, features functional objects that are also works of art. The hats, jewelry, furniture, and glass and ceramic objects created by contemporary South Carolina artists have an aesthetic and pragmatic appeal.

Clark Ellefson's Neo Kimono plays on the form versus function concept and is a cabinet shaped like a hanging kimono, an object that is itself a work of art to be worn. Christine Tedesco's quilts combine traditional folk craft with a modernistic approach. Leigh Magar's Athena, which includes single black feathers, is the hat that she wore in her wedding. Charmed Life, a necklace by Susan Willis, is a work in progress made of elements that represent memorable milestones in the owner's life.

Artists represented in the exhibition include Nikki Barnes of Rock Hill (glass), Lynn Clark of Columbia (jewelry and silverware), Rob Silance of Pendleton (lamps), Alf Ward of Rock Hill (silver tea pots), Denise Woodward-Detrich of Walhalla (ceramics), David Zacharias of Spartanburg (ceramics), Christine Tedesco of Pendleton (quilts), Susan Willis of Greenville (jewelry), Leigh Magar of Charleston (hats), and Clark Ellefson of Columbia (furniture and lamps).

The common link among the objects in Practical Extravagance is their distinctive, uncommon character. The exhibition is evidence that the extraordinary exists everywhere for those who can see it and make it visible to others.
