New Perspectives Gallery, 180 Meeting St., 2nd Floor hallway, (new Office of Cultural Affairs exhibition space), Charleston. Columbia Museum of Art, Main & Hampton Streets, Columbia. Lipscomb Family Galleries, Through June 8 - "Excavating Egypt: Great Discoveries from the Petrie Museum of Egyptian Archaeology". This major exhibition offers a fascinating view into the lives of both royal and average Egyptians with ancient objects and artwork from the earliest periods of Egyptian history to the late Roman period. The exhibit features more than 200 of W. M. Flinders Petrie's most significant finds many never before seen by the public. The objects, hidden away in secret storage facilities throughout London at the beginning of World War II, have not been displayed until now. They are part of a remarkable collection of "firsts" and include: one of the world's oldest garments, a rare beaded-net dress from the Pyramid Age, circa 2400 BC; a fragment of mankind's first history book from 2900 BC; the earliest examples of metalwork in Egypt; the earliest examples of glass so rare the Egyptians classed it with precious gems; the oldest "blueprint," written on papyrus; the first royal monument, from the reign of the legendary Scorpion King, from 3100 BC. BB&T Focus Gallery, Through July 20 - "Found Heaven: The Lowcountry of Alfred Heber Hutty," featuring a new installation of 24 works by Charleston Renaissance artist Alfred Heber Hutty. The installation includes one of only two pastel drawings known to exist by Hutty as well as a selection of etchings, drypoints, paintings and drawings by Hutty (1878-1954). Ray Taylor Fair Gallery, Ongoing - Featuring a new and permanent installation of its ancient art collection. The installation includes approximately 50 objects that introduce the major ancient civilizations from the Mediterranean and Near East. Examples of the earliest form of writing from 12th century B.C. Mesopotamia, are shown next to Egyptian scarabs and Greek painted vessels. The world of the ancient Romans is represented by 2nd century glass and bronze items and portrait sculpture. Many of these works have not been seen since the Museum moved to its location on Main Street in 1998. The collection has grown over the last several years with the donation of 12 fine Roman sculptures in 2002 from Pennsylvania collector Dr. Robert Y. Turner. SC Confederate Relic Room & Military Museum, 301 Gervais Street, in the same building that houses the State Museum, Columbia. Through June 28 - "Civil War Photographs from the David L. Hack Collection." This traveling exhibit organized by the Chrysler Museum of Art in Norfolk,VA, features unique and rare period photographs. These images include Robert E. Lee in the uniform he wore while surrendering at Appomattox and Abraham Lincoln's last formal photo session in the White House. Photographs of battlefield medicine tents at Gettysburg, a military band, and Confederate spy Rose Greenhow are among the unique scenes on display. Also included is one of the first examples of photo journalism in American history - Alexander Gardner's photograph series of the Lincoln assassination conspirators' execution. Admission: Yes. SC State Museum, 301 Gervais Street, Columbia. Lipscomb Gallery, Through Sept. 7 - "State Museum 20th Anniversary Juried Art Exhibition," juried by Lia Newman, director of programs and exhibitions at Artspace in Raleigh, NC, and artist Brian Rutenberg, a native of Myrtle Beach, SC, who now works in New York City. The exhibit will feature 100 works by SC artists. Through May 11 - "Finding Priscilla's Children". Priscilla's story is told through a document trail that goes back 256 years beginning with her trip from Sierra Leone on the Rhode Island slave ship Hare and tracing her life on the Ball plantation near Charleston, SC. The Crescent Café, second floor mezzanine of the Museum. The house menu offers a variety of baked goods, juices, coffee, hot chocolate and tea. Joshua Shaw
Greenville County Museum of Art, 420 College Street, Greenville. Through June 1 - "Katherine Porter: Celestial Electric Set". Porter was born in Iowa, but her passion for places has taken her to such disparate cities as Montreal, Canada; and Portland, Maine; Paris, France; and Madison, Wisconsin. Her abstract views of the landscape are at the core of this exhibit, which also features elements of political symbolism, part of Porter's mission since her earliest paintings. Her paintings are big, bold, and vigorous, conversing in a visual language of floating discs intersecting with arcs and spiraling lines. Through June 1 - "Paul Yanko: Member Showcase," presents intensely structured and tactile paintings by this Greenville artist. Yanko, who teaches at the Governor's School for the Arts and Humanities, uses masking tape to define a framework that he embellishes with layers of paint. Through June 15 - Presenting an overview of the career of Dr. David C. Driskell, who is one of the pre-eminent African-American artists and educators of our time. A North Carolina native, Driskell advanced the understanding of the evolution of black visual art in America as a professor at Talladega, Howard, and Fisk Universities and capped his academic career as chair of the art department at the University of Maryland. Driskell is also a noted consultant in African-American art, advising actor Bill Cosby and his wife Camille on the formation of their collection, which he described in the book "The Other Side of Color". Through Sept. 28 - "Masters of Watercolor: Andrew Wyeth and His Contemporaries," featuring an exhibit which compares and contrasts Wyeth with such realist painters as Stephen Scott Young, Henry Casselli, Hubert Shuptrine, and Mary Whyte. The installation also includes historical examples from the Museum collection by artists such as Thomas Hart Benton, Edward Hopper, and Charles Burchfield-icons of the American Scene movement who were influential in the early development of Wyeth's distinguished career. Through Sept. 28 - "Joshua Shaw: A Paradise of Riches," featuring a series of Southern landscapes by Joshua Shaw (1776-1860), a British-born painter whose work is owned by only a few American museums, including the Smithsonian American Art Museum. Through Oct. 5 - "Stone Cold Classics". Featuring a series of exhibitions that celebrate the breadth and depth of the Museum's collection. Downtown Seneca, May 24 - 25, 2008 - "Meet and 3," Memorial Day Festival. The Blue Ridge Arts Council will again participate in "Arts on the Alley" with a two-day "Make It & Take It" for the kids and artists painting on the alley. Arts on the Alley will run in conjunction with the Education Foundation of Oconee County and the City of Seneca. Called the "Meet and 3," the Memorial Day festival will include numerous admission-free events including the displays on Ram Cat Alley and Townville Street, a cruise-in, and day-long music includes headliner Billy Joe Royal. The education foundation is sponsoring a competition barbecue, and tickets for prize-winning barbecue from top cookers in the region cost $10 each. Spartanburg Art Museum, Chapman Cultural Arts Center, 200 East St. John Street, Spartanburg. Through May 4 - William Thomas Thompson. Thompson, who has created an expansive series of paintings on the theme of Biblical Revelation, has had his work exhibited in art museums in Atlanta, Baltimore, Las Vegas, Seattle and St. Louis. Approximately half of his work deals with Biblical themes. Other topics critically address social problems and inequities which Thompson recognizes in Western society. May 13 - July 5 - "Mac Arthur Goodwin - A journey of imagery and a tribute to the women of Gee's Bend". Renowned as both artist and arts educator, Dr. Mac Arthur Goodwin has contributed significantly to the artistic and aesthetic definition of the arts at the state and national level. He received the Governor's Award for the Arts and the Order of the Palmetto. Goodwin has been named both the National art educator and National art supervisor and administrator. May 13 - July 5 - "Claire Miller Hopkins: Something Old, Something New, Something Borrowed, Something Blue". Hopkins work in oil, watercolor and pastel is widely known throughout the southeast and has won awards in national and regional exhibitions. Her many memberships include The Pastel Society of America in which she has been bestowed the designation of Master Pastelist. A featured artist in "The Artists' Magazine" in Fall of 1994, Hopkins was a contributing artist in a number of books including "Pastel Interpretations" (Northlight 1993), "The Best of Portrait Painting" (Northlight 1998), and "The Art of Pastel Portraiture" (Watson-Guptil 1997).
