Random Color Creations by Cathy Vandiford Wiggins at Semans Gallery in Durham, NC

Random Color Creations, an exhibit of watercolor and acrylics on paper by Raleigh artist, Cathy Vandiford Wiggins will hang in the Semans Gallery of the Durham Arts Council Building, in downtown Durham, NC, through Sept. 7.

The artist's technique is unusual in that she first determines the location of the lightest values of the piece and masks out those areas. Then she selects four or five colors to be used through out the process and pours the colors onto paper. Once the paint has dried, she repeats the process for the next lightest value and continues until the only portions of the painting not covered with the masking are the darkest areas. Once the last pouring of paint has dried, she then peels the masking off of the paper to reveal the finished work.

Cathy Vandiford Wiggins has developed workshops allowing her the ability to share this technique of creating art with others. "I teach this through the understanding of values, a beautiful painting can be created without ever picking up a paintbrush." Her past exhibits include: Durham Art Guild Curated Show, CCB Visual Arts Gallery, Durham, 1999, Raleigh Fine Arts Society Exhibition, Meredith College, Raleigh, NC, 1999, and New Art in the Triangle, Duke University Museum of Art, 1998.
