St. Johns Museum of Art Presents Retrospective on Bert Carpenter and Other Exhibits

More than sixty years in the artistic career of Bert Carpenter - Professor Emeritus of Art at the University of NC at Greensboro - will be examined in Bert Carpenter: A Retrospective, which opens Sept. 23, at St. John's Museum of Art in Wilmington, NC. The exhibit will continue through Nov. 28, 1999. Nearly fifty works displaying the vibrant colors and textures of a lifetime dedicated to the details of realism will be on display in the Hughes Gallery, including still lifes, portraits, landscapes and mythological scenes. Prominent in the exhibition will be the large-scale series of figures for which Carpenter is renown. Also two of the region's artists will be featured in the Art Sales Gallery Exhibition: B. F. Reed of Jacksonville, NC, and Natalie Schorr of Wilmington, NC, will display prints and watercolors.

Bert Carpenter

Born in Billings, Montana in 1920, Bert Carpenter studied art at Stanford University and earned his Ph.D. in art history at Columbia University. After teaching at the University of Hawaii, he was asked to join the art faculty of UNC Greensboro, located in Greensboro, NC in 1963 and also served as head of the school's art department. During the 1970s he became director of the university's Weatherspoon Art Gallery, where he has been instrumental in developing a collection of national prominence.

The works on display in Bert Carpenter: A Retrospective include earlier portraits and self-portraits from the 1930s and 1940s, and continue through to the still-lifes (such as Reflections (1980)) and series in the 1980s such as Hooded, Standing, Wrapped. The exhibition is organized by the Weatherspoon Art Gallery.

Two artists from southeastern NC also open exhibitions in the Art Sales Gallery at St. John's Museum of Art that represent two differed approaches to the subjects of still-life and landscape painting.

All artwork displayed in the museum's Art Sales Gallery is available for purchase through the museum's gift shop.

B.F. Reed has had a distinguished career as an artist as well as educator and member of the armed forces. She has taught art in the Onslow County school system and served in the marketing department (Morale, Welfare and Recreation) for the Commanding General, 8th U.S. Army in Seoul, Korea. It was in Seoul, in 1993, that Reed presented First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton with a limited edition print. For almost 20 years her distinctive watercolors have been displayed in art galleries along the east coast of the U.S. and abroad, including Japan and South Korea. She has been recognized by the National Watercolor Society and Watercolor Society of NC, and twice has received Emerging Artists grants from the Eastern North Carolina Arts Council.

Natalie Schorr's prints and watercolors focus on cityscapes and structures - "architectural artifacts" - and complement her career in the movie industry as an art director and set designer. She received her bachelor's of fine arts degree in costume design and a master's of fine arts degree in scene design. Her work has been included in numerous juried exhibitions in the region, and she was the People's Choice Award winner this year at the 27th Annual Competition for North Carolina Artists organized by the Fayetteville Museum of Art.
